Just a small problem I noticed. I uploaded enough pictures that they "appeared" on multiple pages. So I edited the first batch that appeared on the first page, and then looked at my two options - either hitting "SAVE ALL" or hitting "2" to go to the second page. I hit "2", editted those, and then hit "SAVE ALL".

A couple of issues...

First, going to the second page, all the "COPY TO ALL PICTURES" stuff wasn't appearing. (this may have to do with what I should have done at the end of the first page, but I figured I'd mention it anyways).

Second issue, I made edits to page 2, and then hit SAVE ALL. The edits I made on page 1 didn't save with page 2.

Should I have hit "SAVE ALL" after editting the first page, and then moved to the second page? If so, can we re-label the SAVE ALL to be clearer that it just saves what is current displayed?

Ok, here's the plan.

  • We'll show up to 10 photos per page rather than 5, so there is less likelihood of it spilling onto two pages
  • Instead of a "Next" link, we'll replace it with a "Save and Continue" button. This way, there is no confusion.

There are still minor downsides to this though

  • If the next page also uses the same details, you will need to fill that in again
  • If you don't want to edit the first ten photos (for whatever reason), it simply won't work.

Thank you SO much! I do love this new feature - However, there is a small problem:

When I first used the Edit Photo's feature, I tried to enter the Location as Pennsylvania, USA - There was already a location in the lookup list as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - which was fine so I used that one and copied it to all pictures and everything worked great.

Yesterday, I upload some photo's from the Badlands National Park in South Dakota, USA. South Dakota, USA wasn't allowed as a Location, so I tried USA. The Location field wouldn't accept that, so I used the drop down arrow and looked up USA and used that.

Then when I tried to Save the edits, they all errored out saying USA wasn't a valid location. I had to lookup the location for each photo individually.

If you could please check this out, I'd appreciate it. I will be visiting a lot of the states and cities in the USA during this trip. Should I just stick to using USA as a location or should I be using the city and or state name also?

The location input places the photo on your travel map, and the travel map primarily works with cities as the identifier for where a photo was taken (states and countries are there just to help distinguish between cities with the same name). So either fill in a city in that field, or don't fill in anything at all. (You can always more accurately place your photos on the map later, using the full mapping interface.)

Had the same location problem, when I used Havana,Cuba it was not accepted, works with only Cuba fine.
@Sander,
Location is a required field marked with a *so you have to fill it in,otherwise you get the error message.

Wow, really? That kinda sucks. Or is it perhaps doubling as country-only input, to replace the regular upload's "country" select?
(I don't have flash, so the whole multiple upload thing isn't accessible for me. Guess that means I shouldn't give advice on this feature, as it's obviously not quite working as I'd envisioned.)

If I type "hav", it pops up as the first result Marlis (Havana, Ciudad de La Habana, Cuba). The database has about 2 million records so cities like that should definitely be included!

Marlis is right, but it's ONLY required if you have this box ticked: "Tick this if you want these photos to show in your photo gallery."

And Sander's assumption is also correct, that is because this replaces the country field that used to be required and because every photo in a user's public gallery should be mapped to some place (country in the past, but we prefer city now). That being said, once the error comes up if you have entered say USA, the error will say this:

No location USA found.
Did you mean <dropdownboxhere>

For some reason, in that dropdown box the option USA is included and when you select it from there it does work I'll let Peter clarify that, but I think that's a bug (ie. it should accept a country as an option on the first submit).

jl98584, national parks are somewhat of an exception to the locations that are included in the database, so try a small town or city nearby. Sorry about that-I've been stuck with that from time to time too!

I highly suspect that's because there's a custom location with the name "USA", and that the photo is then assigned to that specific location, rather than to the general country-midpoint location.

For the photo upload case (and maybe for facebook, too - I don't know if "just country" is accepted there?), you might want to override the regular "multiple locations" logic if the location exactly matches a country name.

Thanks. I'll go back and add cities to all my locations as I can (I'm behind anyway, but prefer this approach than just USA - which is kind of a big place.

My map is screwed up, I haven't been able to update it since I left home, so will have to try to delete it or add a new one. (Sorry, I meant to ask for help with this on the forum, but have been behind. It's hard driving and touring all day, then trying to update the blog at night - but it's definitely worth it!)

ps - still love your site (and the friendly folks on the forum!)
