Hi.
I'm going to Bangkok for only a week on my way down to Australia in January and I want to see as much as possible there. Does anyone have any advice on what I should see, and nearby places to visit for such a short time? Any accomodation advices?

Thanks=)

Christine

Hello ChristineO:)

U could visit Kanchanaburi, for a few days.
It is a lovely little place and particularly interesting if u are interested in WW2 history
It is just a few hours busride, from Bangkok.
I recommend that u stay at the Bluestar guesthouse.
If u dont mind paying 600 Baht per night, ask for a bungalow right beside the river.
There are also bungalows beside the cafe, for 150Bahts per night.

In Bangkok, u can stay at the Khao San Road, if u want to meet lots of backpackers.
If u want to prebook(which there is no need for) accomodation use the following link.

further to Mel's suggestions here are some more places i would recommend:

ayutthaya - an ancient city and former capital of thailand, not far from bangkok

in bangkok:
- the grand palace
- jim thompsons house
- trip along the klongs (canals)
- floating market

for accommodation, soi rambuttri is round the corner from khao san road and is quieter and less commercialised. there are a range of budget options around here and a couple of mid range hotels. also plenty of places to eat, street stalls and several travel agents.

For shopping, you can go to Chatuchak Weekend Market (short walk from Mochit BTS Station), Suan Lum Night Baazar (Lumpini area), Platinum Mall (Pratunam area) and Patpong for night market.
Enjoy.

And u could ride up and down the river, on the passanger boats.
It only costs around 40 cents to get all the way down to the last pier or all the way up to the first pier, on the boat.
And there is a nice breeze on the boats, so when it is very hot.

Oh ya, try to stop by at Erawan Shrine (Four faces Buddha)...
Just a short walk from Chidlom BTS Station....If you are going there by TUk Tuk or Cab, tell the drivers EREWAN SHRINE because there are few Temples which hv Four Faces Buddha as well.

One of my favourite places in BKK is the Red House (Tamnak Daeng), an airy teak house, at the National Museum

Thanks everyone!

It's sad to only have a week in Bangkok, it seems like there are lots of thing to see, but I'll try to make the most of it=)
