None of the those links u posted are about Burma.
If u want to talk about Iraq or bad things the UN did, then would u start a thread especially for it.

Agree, posts being removed as we speak.

In general, although I figure it pretty obvious from the name travellerspoint, this is a site about travel and the whole political agenda generally doesn't sit well on this site. I'm not disagreeing one way or the other, just pointing out that this might not be the place to generate the biggest following for any type of political upheavel :)

I hear u Sam and think I understand what u mean.:)
Anyway, roll on UN arms embargo.

Anyway, to ask a silly question, does anybody know how long it would it take for this embargo to work?
Days, weeks, months....?
Then I suppose the Burmese millitary would have to run out of ammunition, before it is over?

It's my perception that these embargo's generally hurt the 'people on the streets' more than the people in power. They'll find some way to get whatever they need into the country anyway. I'm sure after several years it becomes tough, but in the short term this shouldn't change much.

Definitely. The Chinese aren't happy about imposing UN sanctions at all and they hold a permanent seat on the UN security council. Similar situation with the Russians.

Another opinion I got when I asked somebody about the arms embargo and if the Burmese people in general would suffer because of it.

That could be a valid point in the case of an embargo on all products, but the population would certainly not suffer from having no ammo :D

A total embargo, as shown in the case of South Africa, doesn't hurt the suppressed people much. They haven't got anything anyway, so what is the government going to take away or deprive them of when an embargo is in place?

If heavy sanctions are imposed on the countries supplying arms to Burma, they will lose more money, than they would have gained, from supplying the arms. It would not be worthwhile for them to veto the arms embargo.

Bear in mind Mel, Burma receives a lot in terms of foreign aid - especially with regard to food and medical supplies. If this stops, food and medicine run short, the market mechanism kicks in, prices go sky high and Joe Bloggs on the street can't feed his family.

You can't impose sanctions on China or Russia.
