my girlfriend and i have booked flights to southeast asia for february 2008. we are flying into hanoi, vietnam then flying home from bangkok a month later. we have nothing else booked as of yet. we plan on going to the angkor area for sure and some southern thailand beach time as well. we have pondered the thought of spending some time one of the following places along the way inbetween angkor and southern thailand: ho chi minh, kuala lumpur, laos or maybe singapore. any suggestions which would be the best spot to go?????
thanks in advance
Singapore is great for shopping as is probably KL but since you're going to Bankok you can shop there as well.
My preference would go to Laos as I loved the country ad the people. It's also very laid-back. The classic route in Laos in a short time is Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Ventiane although the latest has not much to offer.
Luang Prabang is very pretty and there's enough to see in the town and around.
Vang Vieng is a backpacker town popular for tubing fun: you basically ride a inner tube on the river for 4km, stopping at bars along the way.
Laos has also some of the best of rural landscape in SEA.
Hope this helps!
I would see the sights in and around HaNoi, fly down to HCMC on Pacific Air, bus over to Phnom Penh. Boat or bus up to Siem Reap, tour Angkor for 3 days, overland to BKK. Overnight bus or fly to Krabi. Hit Railay Beach, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, fly or overnight bus back to BKK and out.
I have photos of all this area in my gallery. Good Luck with your trip.
