Lonely planet, (from what I remember, I don't have a copy with me) said that regional flights within SE Asia between major cities cost about $70-100 US. However, the travel agent seems to think flights won't be available for this price. Is the travel agent just trying to flog us more expensive tickets, or have I got it wrong about the cost? Does the cost vary seasonally? We'll be travelling in December.
if you book well in advance using http://www.airasia.com/ you could get flights for less than this around Se Asia. bangkok airways (http://www.bangkokair.com/ ) also offer reasonably priced tickets throughout the region. I flew a couple of times with both these airlines. I also flew twice with Vietnma Airlines and paid aournf $120 (Vientiane - Hanoi) and $80 (danang - nha trang) but this was booking the day before and they are not a budget airline as such.
Not sure about seasonal variations but if you book now for december I think you should still get good deals.

roughly how far would far in advance be???? a month???
i think a month would enable you to go get a good deal - we booked the day before with air asia and only paid £40 from KL to Phuket.
Check the local airlines website they have special deals . I booked a flight from Bkk to phuket and I had to pay just the taxes which was 642 thb one way Aud 23$. keepchecking it every day as they had special promos regularly.
hope this helps
Check out any of these websites for SEA internal / regional flights an fares - ive been flying alot over the last 4months even thou im on a strict budget but gr8 deals can be found.
Like for instance im about to fly from Jakarta, Indonesia via Singapore to Bangkok for 70euro / 48sterling / $100 - Jetstar
Also flew from Bangkok to Chaing Mai (North Thailand) for 15euro - AirAsia
We've just returned from Vietnam. We booked flights with Vietnam Airlines thru our (budget) hotel 2 days before flying, and paid US$100 for HCMC - Hanoi, and US$80 for Danang to HCMC. I believe that Air Pacific is around $20 cheaper.
It was all very smooth and easy. Most hotel reception desks seem to be able to organise transport for you.
We found the flexibility in organising the flights in Vietnam very convenient when we were trying to avoid the typhoon!
