Hi all, going to Lao in December for about 3 weeks, any suggestions on places to visit?

Will enter and depart from Udon Thani in Thailand, so i expect i will have to backtrack a bit. Will cross over to Lao on the 2nd through the Friendship Bridge, but since its National Day in Lao im not sure if immigration is open. Can anyone shed some light on this too?

My itinery now reads something like this:

UTH - Vientiane - Vang Vieng - Luang Prabang - Luang Nam Tha

then back all the way to prabang to go to Phonsavan.

It does seem so involve considerable backtracking, and i hear transport in Lao is quite slow, so does anyone have any advise how i can fit these into a 3 week itinery without too many detours/backtracks?

Thanks, any help greatly appreciated. Cant wait for december....

Any advise on Laos at all? Just general stuff on places to see, what should not be missed etc....

Thinking of Phonsavan (Plain of Jars) or Luang Namtha (trekking/rafting), cos i dont think il be able to fit both into my rather tight schedule. Any advise on picking one here?

hey itenerant, hope you dont mind me adding to your thread

i need to head to Laos to get away from Thailand (visa regulations situation)

i'd like to know if anyone has information about some great areas, for nightlife, for hotels (cheapest hotels that have highspeed internet in room), great restaurants, etc etc etc, i'll be going there for 1 week, 1st time ever going to Laos, so if somebody could hook me up with a cheat sheet would be AWESOME

:)

Again, Im just adding to this thread, hopefully somebody out there can shed some light. We are in Kanchanaburi at the mo, heading to chiang mai tomorrow and then into lao - probably from chiang Mai to Luang Prebang. Has anybody travelled from Vientienne to Hano by road/boat? Any advice on wether to this or fly?

Any help would be really great

Thanks
Clare

Clare,

From Chiang Kong, u cross by boat, to Huayxai, and from here you will take boat to Pak Beng (overnight), and next day to LP.

As for journey from Vientiane to Hanoi (?)...yes..u can journey by bus..but it's long trip..You have to take bus to Ponsavan, from from here to Xam Neua, then to Nam Xoi (O) border, and over the Ma Meo (V) border outpost..and from here, u can find transport ( not regular)..to Hanoi or Thanh Noa.

Other routes from Laos into Vietnam will take you to destinations miles away from Hanoi.

I did a trip like danalasta suggested. However, from Vientiane I flew by Laos Airline to Hanoi instead of spending too long time torturing my butt on the bus. I read on the net before going on this trip, and found that, if you could be on the bus that takes you all the way long to Hanoi without broken down at one or two spots, you are winning a lotto !!.... This time is rainy season, road trip can be even worse. Well, if you have time to kill, this can be an interesting experience, but I only had one week for each country.

For zachary, hmm.........cheapest hotels that have highspeed internet in room... I am not sure if something like that exists unless cheapest hotel means five stars one in Vientiane (not even sure about this). Well, may be there's something like that already, as the time I was there was two years ago already.

i got a bus from hanoi direct to vientiane in july, it took 22 hours but it wasnt as bad as it sounds. the scenery on the way is amazing and the bus didnt break down either. im sure you can do this route in the opposite direction too! as for nightlife luang prabang is good, the bars all close at 11.30 but you can go to the bowling alley and they serve there till about 3. tubing in vang vien is also good for partying but everything closes at 11 there! day time drinking and what not;)

My itinery now reads something like this:

UTH - Vientiane - Vang Vieng - Luang Prabang - Luang Nam Tha

If u give ponsavan a skip, then u can do a trip without doing a back track, given that u only have three weeks.

When u are done with Luang Nam Tha ( wonderful area for trekking to tribal village, rapid shooting, etc..within the Luang Namtha Biodiversity Conservation Area), get out by boat from Ban Khone ( near Luang Nam tha airport)...and it will take you up to Pak Tha (check point for boats travelling up and down the Namtha River), and from here u can get boat to Huay xai from where u cross over into Chiang Kong on Thai side. It is easy to get direct bus from Chiang Kong to BKK.
