Purdy, I totally support your attempts to keep this topic on track. The topic is an interesting one and certainly there are different ways of looking at it. But people need to ensure it doesn't become a simple case of slinging arguments back and forth.

I recently read an article that might be of interest; Under the Banyan Tree on World Hum is about a visit to Burma after the Saffron Revolution. In particular the following quote leans me towards the idea of NOT having a boycott:

Quoting Under the Banyan Tree

Travel and travelers help Burma and the Burmese. When I first arrived in Yangon, a relative told me about a sharp spike in the number of karaoke girls—Southeast Asian for prostitute—in the city. Many of the women, he said, had lost jobs in the tourism industry following the September protests. Prostitution was their means out.

I'm not really convinced either way though to be honest, but that's a good example of the direct results of a boycott. I'm doubt the junta is much fussed.

How anyone would get any idea about Burma as a destination from this thread is beyond me...it started with what was little more then a political rant anyhow....

This post is a fine example of lightwieght arguments thaat fail to address any of the real issues that surround this serious subject.
Furthermore it is an example of how NOT to moderate a thread; a mish-mash of muddled and totally incompetent moderating, with opinions being expressed by moderators that show only a tenuouos grasp of the content or argument.....don't give up the day-time jobs!
