I don't know much about renting campers, but if you can get yourself a set of wheels for an affordable price than it is without question the best way to get around the country. I can assure you your trip will be 10 times better than taking the bus.
Camping in Australia is fantastic, with options in just about every single little town you go to. Facilities are great, with adequate showers, cooking facilities, fridges etc.. I really enjoyed it because it was a great way to meet Australians instead of only foreign backpackers in hostels. Many evenings were spent at campgrounds playing cards or cooking dinner with Australian families on vacation.
There are also many opportunities to pull over and sleep on the side of the road for free.

Relocating a campervan can be great or horrible.
We did it last June and ended up with an old campervan that was uncomfortable, noisy, very hard to handle and had an oil leak at the end. My piece of advice would be that you make sure beforehand that the campervan doesn't need to be relocated for reparation + get as much of information about the model and its general conditions....

The only problem you have with relocating is it has to be at a certain place for the next rental, so you dont get 4 weeks of doing what you want for $1 a day. They will give you like 2 days to drive from cairns to sydney.Ive dont it but I worked for a Campervan company and know how it all works.;)
