Hey - the cheapest an best way to get to Lauang Prabang, Laos capital is via slow boat. You can organise in Chiang Mai in ur guesthouse or any travel agent - basically its a 5hr bus journey to a place called Chaing Khong where you get a slow boat for 2 days to the Laos border where you get ur visa....the slow boat is tough tough work thou cause it doesnt have much seating room and its abput 7hrs on both days with accomdation paid for on first night...drop me an email if ya need more info

HI we're finished the two day journey and just to let anybody know we actually found it grand. We bought cushions for 40 baht and it was as comfortable as your gonna get on a boad for 7 hours!! the scenery on the way is really breathtaking and i would definitely reccomend this over the speedboat any day! the first day were hard wooden seats but the second day were mostly reclining airoplane seats! (which we didnt get cos I slept it out!!!!)

My wife and I took an overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang May (where we stayed a few days), then as bus to Thaton (where we stayed overnight), a long-tail boat from Thaton to Chiang Rai (a great little town we really enjoyed for a few days), then a bus to the Lao border and Huay Xai for the two-day slowboat to Luang Prabang, then Vang Vieng, back into Thailand at Nong Khai for the train back to Bangkok.
