G'Day.
Planning a trip to Thailand for early '08. Flying into Bangkok for a few days, then moving onto Chiang Mai. Last time we went we just flew from Bangkok to Chiang Mai but have heard that the train trip is really nice and scenic. Has anyone done it? Think it's worth spending 12hrs on a train or should we just fly again?

Why not give it a try. Its quite comfortable. Buy the sleeping booth coach. At least you can see more about the Thai countryside.

The train to Chiang Mai was really good i'd def recommend it. Don't see much scenery however as it is pitch black outside for most of it - if you get overnight one. Get 2nd class sleeping bunk (preferably the lower one)
book in advance as it gets really full - especially at weekend

Well you won't see much from the train, especially after sunset. One advantage of having a sleeper car is that you save the cost of another night in a hotel in town.

The porters did take an order for breakfast, if you like your food cooked well done then forget about it! Bring some snacks with you and some handwipe things AND a book to read!

You get into Chiang Mai early in the morning and have the whole day ahead of you!

Thanks everyone. Was actually thinking about doing the daytime ride so I CAN actually see some countryside. Might give it a go.

HI

I traveled to Chiang Mai from Bangkok v recently. The ticket cost me around 750bht. That was for a upper bunk which I found uncomfortable, your better of choosing the lower bed more room. I traveled on the 2nd class sleeper train which leaves Bangkok at 6pm. By about 7.30 the guy was coming around to make all the beds, no choice as to whether you wanted him to or not. you can eat you meal, 150bht, in the restaurant car. Most people were asleep by 9pm not very exciting and as it was dark so no nice views. I arrived in Chiang Mai at 7.15am

Hope this helps you, its a good way to travel but you may be better off doing a day time trip. People I have spoken to enjoyed the bus trip from Bangkok to Chiang Mai at half the price I payed but a long time to spend on a bus.

Good travels
