I just booked my flight to Australia for 5 weeks starting May 08. I'll be flying JFK-LAX-SYD (22 hrs total ) and then MEL-LAX-JFK (for USD $1480 R/T - if others are looking to travel, Qantas is having a sale ending 10/26). Sooo my question to you is what is the flight like (besides long). All Oz bound flights from Cali depart around midnight so is it dark then get light then dark again? That must really throw off your sleep schedule! Also whats the flight like from Melbourne to LAX? (is that an all night flight?) I'm just wondering out of curiosity...I don't know how my iPod is going to last that long, but thankfully Qantas has PTV whereas United is still back in the 1980s with the projectors.

No, you'll leave LAX in the dark, and then get an extra long night (because you're flying along with the night), to arrive sometime in the morning (but a day later than you'd think, because you crossed the date boundary).
As long as you can manage to get in a couple of hours of sleep on that flight (the more, the better), your sleep schedule should be fine. Try to start living on pacific time for a day before you leave, and then just make certain to stay awake during that first day and go to bed no earlier than 20:00 Australian local time to wake up at a regular time on your second day.
It's after the flight home that your sleep schedule will really suffer.

Thanks for the good advise. Has anyone done the JFK-LAX-SYD on Qantas? Are you able to get off the plane for the 1 hr 45 mins the plane is at LAX?
Hey I did that exact flight JFK-LAX-SYD this past Feburary, I had to get off my flight in LAX so that it could be restocked and cleaned for the rest of the trip to SYD. However we stayed within the area of the gate. Its definately a good chance to walk around and stretch a little before getting back on the flight though. I agree about setting a clock to SYD time when you start traveling so you can adjust as you travel into the new time. It wasn't too difficult for me to adjust when I got to Sydney, I did get a good amount of sleep on the flight though. Australia is amazing, are you going for a long vacation?...Happy Travels, Qantas is a great airline to fly there with, the personal on demand TV definately help.
