hi andy
had a great time there in may and the only con i come across was the person wanting to talk to you to practice their english, then they will suggest going for a drink which leads to a very expensive tea ceremony or they will be interested in art and ask you to go to a student exhibition which is all comercial mass produced, if yousay no they are not rude or pushy and at times were a great help in directions etc. only found this in beijing. as for nightlife i did a hutong tour in the day in the dong cheng district (northeast of the forbidden city 1 to 2 km ) and found some great little bars some with live music , did not find any nightclubs but the bars were good and go to the night markets for some local food grasshopper scorpion etc but this is only open between 6pm and 8pm . buy a beijing city map and this is at the north end of wangfujing dajie a couple of streets from the forbidden palace

Hi Andy,

I can just confirm the post above.
The usual invitation to an "art exhibition" that aims only one thing: to buy reproductions (though in emergency they could serve as last-minute-souvenirs). Mostly girls who are enquiring about your origin to practice their English (though according to my host there, she told me, that when she started to learn english, even her was looking for foreigners to practice it without any other scam-motivated subject in her mind).
So generally, if you kindly let them know that you let them know, that you are not interested, they won't chase you, and sometimes it even pays off, e.g you lost your way, or just want to make a picture of yourself :)).

Have a memorable trip to Beijing.
