Hi Katarina,
I'm actually in New Delhi right now and I'm about to travel around a little bit by myself. I was on a business trip here and now I'll take 2 days off so I'll only get about 4 days (with the weekend) which is nothing - but I will try to do Agra and Varanasi and then go back to Delhi to fly back home. I will defenitely let you know how it goes! I started to get a bit nervous when I read the first reply in this thread, but now I feel all reassured and excited! It's gonna be so much fun...

Im not sure this thread need another post but I just wanna say that I travelled in India alone for 3 months and can highly recommend it. After getting used to/how to ignore starring, comments etc there is absolutely no problem. Some advices, avoid dark streets, choose hostels in busy areas, main streets, city centre or close to the train station if arriving late, wear clothes similar to India clothes. The worst thing happening to me was being felt up in some crowded places, perfectly ok to show anger and hitting the man with your shoe is a good punishment (so I was told anyway, never practised it, not very practical....)

Hi again,
I did have an awesome time!!! I really did. I was so fascinated and amazed by everything; colors, people, sounds, smells (it can be a bit smelly in places)... everything is so beautiful! I really fell in love with India, and I didn't encounter any problems at all as a single woman travelling. You have to be somewhat adventurous and intrepid, and even stubborn sometimes to get people to help you, but I think you are. I never felt at hazard at any point, and people staring doesn't bother me, just ignore them (because it will happen). Be sure to wear "India-like" clothes though. It really does help a lot. You can't really show your legs, wear trousers or skirts covering your knees well, and in general don't show too much bare skin. Watch the Indian women and you'll see what is okay and what isn't!
So... enjoy. It is a truly fantastic country. Unfortunately, I seemed to catch some of that "Delhi belly" and have been home sick now for 4 days... That, I would say, is a greater danger to you as a single traveller. Not so much fun ending up really sick at some dodgy hostel somewhere alone. I was lucky, I made it back home before it hit me. But it seems to hit most people going there, at some point. Bring that antiseptic soap where ever you go!

Most of all, good luck.
