We are currently in Swaziland and will be travlling through Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi and Mosambique. Along the way we want to do a self srive safari through one of the national parks.
Does anyone have any advice or recommandations as to where they think is best?
So far we were thinking of Etosha National Park in Namibia but any thoughts information or experiences would be very much appreciated.
Thanks very much,
Likewise, if anyone is travelling around these parts also, give us a shout..
When I was reading the countries you listed, my mind went to Etosha NP as well.
Not only because I have been there myself, also because apart from Botswana the other countries are not well catered for the selfdrivers among us.
But also Botswana hasn't got the same possibilities as Etosha. Parks are more expensive and to actually get the best out of your trip, you have to fly into Okavango for example.
Etosha is just a perfect park for a selfdrive safari, with very good and flat gravelroads. Visibility is usually very good as well and apart from buffalos you can spot the big five over here.
The eastern part of the park is open to selfdrivers and has 3 restcamps of which Okaukuejo is the largest and best equiped. Also the attractive waterhole offers something to enjoy at night when large herds of elephants and black rhinos come to drink here, apart from the other animals like zebra, springbok, oryx and giraffe.
If you want to spend the night here, book in advance, although during the southern hemispheres summer it is not as busy as in the cooler and drier wintermonths.
Have fun! Michael
Thanks for the replies guys,
We will definately check out the link for Zambia options but fate has pointed us to Etosha today as we managed to get a camper van relocation from Joberg to Windhoek so from there we'll head up to Etosha as it really does seem to be the best for self drive.. incase anyone needs a cheap way from joburg to windhoek we have used Britz (rentals) who seem to have loads of relocations and pay 2500 rand for your journey the number is 0711 3961860 just phone and see what they have!
Thanks again for the help, we'll be visiting a few parks during our trip so will let people know what we think
