Just wondering if anyones has travelled to see the Maliau Basin in Borneo?
Any idea how long the tours take, or what the required fitness levels are?
The idea of trekking into a lost world sounds amazing, but I just wanted to make sure its not going to take up my entire time or get me stuck in the middle of the rainforest.
I understand this isnt one of the usual tourist trap locations so any comments at very much appreciated.
I was in Maliau Basin exactly one year ago. It's an amazing place.
Most tours do 4 nights within the park. But I think you can go for a shorter tour if you want. The drive from Tawau took 4-5 hours but that was in the wet season and also they are making a road, so the journey time is probably shorter now.
The trekking is very tough in the sense that there are many steep up and down hills, as you have to get up onto the basin, and then down to the waterfalls etc. But if you are reasonably fit you should be OK.
When I went it was compulsary for everyone to have a medical certificate of fitness but I've heard they may have scrapped this. However you do have to have travel insurance which covers emergency evacuation by helicopter. The tour agent can arrange this for you.
It's definitely not a tourist trap, as very few people go there. And most Malaysians have never even heard of it. Maliau is next to Danum Valley which is very touristy.
if you have the chance, go for it
Thanks Lizp. I don't suppose you happen to have climbed mount kinabalu before? I did it a couple of years ago and found that relatively easy fitness wise, but was just wondering how you would compare the required fitness levels to that required to visit Maliau Basin?
