I'm heading over there for the Cup next weekend - any hostels anyone can highly recommend?

Thank you! xxx

Any which is free; as I remember it, the Cup was one of those events for which they all booked full a couple of days in advance. (That was a few years ago though, not certain if that's still an issue.)

That said, my personal favorite hostel was the YHA Melbourne Oasis. A bit further out from the city center (20 minute walk, 10 minute tram ride, with the tram stopping right next door), but has a very nice lounge, great atmosphere, and all the regular rooms are twins, which you get for the same price (per bed) as a four-bed dorm in the YHA Metro. It's also located right next to Royal Park, which makes for a very nice spot to walk through, especially around sunset, when the lorrikeets start going crazy. :)

I've stayed at 2 hostels in Melbourne before. One was the Greenhouse Backpackers. It was awesome, I'd definitely recommend it. Its right in the heart of the city, has some nice added extras such as dinner on Tuesday nights, $3 pub crawls on Thursdays, huge TV room, great staff etc etc.

The other was Bev and Mic's, near the Vic Markets. This was cheap ($15/night), but very basic; small rooms, sometimes cold showers, and saggy matresses.

If you can get a space in the Greenhouse, do it!!
