When I went to Guatamala 10 years ago, it was hellishly dangerous.
The chances of getting robbed at knife point were almost 100%.
I did not think travelling there was worth the risk.
I have been told that things have changed and Guatamala has become a backpackers mecca.
Does anybody have any comments about this?
If it is true I will reconsider Guatamala as a travel destination.
Definitely reconsider it! I haven't been, but I've spent quite a bit of time traveling in Honduras, and hanging out with other travels who had just come from Guatemala. It seems to be the most popular destination among the backpackers I met, and no one mentioned any dangerous situations! I think all of Central America has become a lot safer in recent years.
I guess in the end it depends on where you want to go and what you want to do, but I wouldn't miss going to Guatemala because you think you're likely to get robbed.
Good luck, and enjoy!
Well, it can not be described as backpackers mecca.
But, things had improved.
Been there in 2005 - it was soo good beyond belief.
I was strolling the streets of Xela until three in the morning - had no problem.
From what I know, danger of being mugged is in Antigua and Atitlan.
My itinenrary from 2005 included: Guate City, Xela, climb on Tajumulco,
Reu, Champerico, Antigua and back to the capital.
Had no problem, even visiting areas around Reu.
I think that Guate is improving every day, unless some crazy dictator appears again.
I can compare Guate to Peru now - almost the same.
And, Peru is not bad, on the contrary...
