I have 3 free weeks during my winter break and my friend and I want to go to volunteer somewhere in Africa, or even Latin America. I spent the summer in Ghana, and worked through a program. I am looking for something where we live localy, and really get to know the culture. I need a program that really uses the money wisely, as opposed to other volunteer programs I have done in the past. Money isn't really an issue. We're interested in teaching, working in orphanages, building..etc. Does anyone have any ideas or know of any place which fits what we're looking for? It'd be really appreciated!
it's really nice you have already taken a move to make the world a better place and still want to volunteer. That is altruistic of you, keep it up.Well i got interested at your post when i saw Ghana.I am a volunteer in Ghana from Italy. which part of Ghana did you do your volunteering and if i may ask through which organisation?Well so far so good,my stay in Ghana has been fun just that i have had a little mosquitoe bites.Do u consider coming back to volunteer?
Here is some advise that was given to somebody here on TP by another member about volunteering in Africa.
For volunteering: i have not found an English forum on volunteering travel. I would avoid paid volunteering travel, which seems to be a business by itself. Rather, before your travelling, once you have more or less an itinerary in your mind, contact some of the expats there on the ground (check with http://www.expat-blog.com/en/directory/africa/ ). This is a small but very active blog community with great people. Many of them either work in the aid-world or at least will know people that can help you. So contact those on the ground directly. Don't go through a headquarter in Europe to find short term work (do that only if you want several months of volunteering).
Certainly living on the spot, working, will give you a completely different taste than travelling through, so I would highly advise that...
If anyone is interested in volunteering for a small youth charity in Ghana please feel free to contact me. There is no fee involved, interested individuals just need to sort out their travel arrangements, food and accomodation (we can help with low cost accomodation). Feel free to contact me for further info.
I spent three months volunteering in Peru, teaching english in the Sacred Valley. It was absolutely brilliant- I stayed with a peruvian host family so my spanish improved so much as well. I went with the company Projects Abroad as I had heard they had a good reputation. The project was so organised and the staff out there were really helpful and always there if I needed. the teaching projects are based in the Sacred Valley which is amazing in itself but there are lots of other projects like care and the community too. I'd definitely take a look at their website as there are tons of volunteer stories on there.
Hope this helps!
Hello hanna ! My name is Khalid !
I read your message, and i find that you're on good way ! all the volunteers must know that giving money is a waste ??
i'd only like people knowing that as the chinese proverb says , it is better to teach people how to fish, than giving them fish every day !
yes it is true that many people suffer from many problem that depend money ! not exactly money, imagine if we have a field that can satisfy our needs in cereals and vegetables over the year ! but we don't exploit it because we have no water, or there is no irrigation canals or weels to irrrigate ! as an inteligent volenteer, i have to think to create a canal that can bring suffisatly and all the time water to the field than giving money to buy bread. after they will have always bread and money ! may these words are very funny but the carry inside alot of meanings !
i really want to discuss with you, if my words pleases you !
thank for an answer !
Great to find people who want to volunteer for the humanity in this strange world. There are charity organisations which have got some programs like the ones you are looking for.The one I can direct you to is in the south of Morocco and you can check their website ,unfortunately they do not have teaching program, but some construction is on the way of their local .They will need painting of the local school and also the center of the association. You can contact the secretary who speaks English in www.associationramlia.org
