Switzerland or Slovenia?

Travel Forums Europe Switzerland or Slovenia?

I'm just planning my route for my big trip to Europe and North America next year. Basically I'll be concentrating on the Mediterannean European countries but I'm now torn between Switzerland or Slovenia due to limited funds.

I love the outdoors but I love culture and architecture as well.

Which should I choose? Switzerland or Slovenia?

Help!! :)

Switzerland is beautiful, but very expensive. I've never been to Slovenia, but I'd break out the crredit card and see Switzerland again. It was that fantastic.

That's a tough one. They are both really great places to visit, but very different countries.

Switzerland is just so majestically beautiful. It's really breathtaking. It's such a comfortable place to travel. Train travel is good, everything arrives on time, the food is great, its beautiful in any weather, you get a flavour of France, Germany and Italy while you are there depending on what part of the country you visit.
However, it's expensive. Some places can feel a little sterile (I thought), like Zurich.

Slovenia is equally beautiful - lots of great mountain scenery, lake country, the people are so friendly, it's relatively cheap compared to other central European countries. Plus you get a more Eastern European flavour there. :)
I really recommend Lake Bled and that part of the country in general - spectacular. And Llubjana is just such a cool studenty city - really good vibe there.

Does any of that help? I can't tell you which to pick because I can't make up my mind either

If you haven't been to Switzerland before, I'd pick it over Slovenia in this case. If you like mountains you have some of the most beautiful spots in europe, such as Lauterbrunnen, Zinal, Zermatt, ... and int erms of architecture, I really like old town of Bern, but there are other places you could go

You say you will go to Switserland or Slovenia due to limited funds....but do you expect it to be cheaper over there than in the Mediterrean?

Anyway, Switzerland is far more beautiful than Slovenia and has a lot more to offer on architecture and culture as well, as there are many great cities to explore as well, next to the most beautiful nature in Europe, along with Iceland, Ireland and Norway. Just great!

I don't know if you have the possibility to rent a car in for example in Italy and drive your way around Switzerland and camp (rent a tent maybe?). As Switzerland can be just as expensive/cheap as you like and camping in Switzerland is much cheaper than for example Italy, France or Spain. Also, bring some supermarket food from other countries if you can when arriving by rental car. Maybe a rental car will seem expensive at first, but it gives you much better opportunities on travelling in Switzerland as traintravel or other public transport can be expensive indeed.

Of course, Slovenia is cheaper on probably every aspect but it's not that impressive.

Oh no, what I meant was I have limited funds. I've chosen the rest of the other med european countries that I will definitely go. Just that I have enough more for probably one more country. So it would be either Switzerland or Slovenia.

My friend just got back from Switzerland and was really raving about it. Thanks for all the feedback. I think I'm now more swayed to Switzerland!

Will you visit Croatia?
I thought its such a nice country when i crossed it in august.
The mediterranean there is still a bit more real than the one you'll find in spain or italy.
However, I didnt see what time of the year you'll be there, but cinque Terre has some nice towns, in italia :D

Yes, I'll definitely visit Croatia. My plan is to start in Turkey and travel along the Adriatic Coast.

I'll start the journey in August, so by the time I reach Italy, it would probably be sometime in October. Is that a good time for Cinque Terre?

Hi,

as a Swiss I definitely have to recommend Switzerland.
There are nice places to visit, although it is expensive. But everything is organized, trains are leaving exactly on time, a lot of Swiss people speak more than one foreign language (you should have no problems with english) and Switzerland is very, very clean.
It also depends, on which time of the year you will visit Switzerland. If you arrive before March you will see a lot of snowy mountains and glaciers, you can experience our cable cars and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
In spring time, a lot of people, especially in the bigger cities like Zurich, Lucerne, Geneva or Basel, are sitting in cafes enjoying the warm sunshine.

You will love Switzerland...
