As regards meeting people I think Thailand would be a good place to start.
Hordes of backpackers go there. U will meet plenty of them at popular backpackpacker hangouts like the Khao San Road in Bangkok, and on the popular backpacker islands like Koh Pha Ngan.

Let's not forget the Philippines ;)

Although, I have to admit, that it takes a commitment to fly into the Philippines since it's away from the rest of Southeast Asia.

If you wanna hit several countries in one month, you're probably better off sticking within the mainland.

Do holler if you decide to swing by the Philippines! I'd be happy to meet you and maybe show you around the city :)

Beijing is another great place to meet a travel companion and to meet people including locals, but Bangkok is a great place too. You'll meet a lot of foreign tourists there most of whom are using it as a gateway to meet and move on.

I agree! Do stop by our country first - Philippines. Try Amanpulo if you'd like a somewhat secluded beach resort.
