I'm going to South East Asia for a month from 15th Dec to the 15th of Jan. All I have is a return ticket to Bangkok at the moment.
I am going to spend Christmas and new year on Koh Phangan for all the parties and will prob do the rest of Thailand before I get there, I have been to Thailand before so know all about their and what I want to do.
My dilema is I don't know what I should do for the 11 or so days. I would love to do Loas, Cambodia and Vietnam. But I know I haven't got enough time to do all 3, prob haven't even got time for 2.
So what I'm after really is advice, what would you do in my situation? What country would you pick? What places would you visit?
With only 10-11 days, I am going to vote for Cambodia. Why don't you make Kog Chang your last beach stop and then head for Cambodia? Easy van ride to the border from Trat, visa on arrival, head for Sihanoukville via road with a share taxi. Boat leaves 8:00am so you will stay 1 night in Koh Kong if you go via boat to S'ville. A few days at the beach, bus to Phnom Penh, 3 days sightseeing, boat or bus to Siem Reap, 3 day Angkor Wat pass, one long day back to BKK from SR. Fly home.
Or fly Air Asia BKK to HAN, see HaNoi, HaLong Bay 3 days, trek Sapa 3 days, and fly back to BKK.
I will let the Laos fans weigh in on why you should choose Laos.
Siem Reip, Angkor Wat
Then boat to Thailand (If on a budget better check the price)
Vang Vieng, Tubing (This is awesome do NOT miss it if you go)
Luang Prabang for waterfalls
Then back to Bangkok
Id choose Laos :-)
I would choose Laos - 11 days is a nice time to spend there to see the main places, which Jenny has listed. 11 days isn't long enough for Vietnam and I would choose Laos over cambodia -although angkor is amazing, Laos is really beautiful and much more chilled out than other south east asian countries.
Since we are voting... I did Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos all last March.
I would definitely say that Vang Vien in Laos was the highlight of my entire trip. You will never find a more laid back town in all of SE Asia as far as I'm concerned. I can't remember the room I stayed in, but it was $4/night. I woke up with an incredible view of the river and massive cliffs looming up overhead.
I rented a scooter one day and did some cave tours, went to the most beautiful swimming hole I have seen in my life - don't miss it - "The Blue Lagoon."
I tubed down the rivers and swung off huge rope swings, drank in the bars, had some great food and made many good friends...
Angkor Wat was fun, but I preferred the laid back party of Laos way more than Siem Riep, Phnom Pen or Ho Chi Minh....
You won't regret Laos, that's a promise!
Thanks for all your votes Vang Vieng sounds really good! I'm really tempted by Loas, is the visa easy to get hold of?
In S/E Asia I would go for Myanmar and Cambodia.
As a travel agent in Hanoi- Vietnam, we suggest that you should spend your time in both Laos, cambodia and Vietnam. You can visit Laos and Cambodia in 1 weeks then to Vietnam 1-2-3 weeks depend on you. Vietnam is now an attractive destination for traveller, let's try.
