East coast Australia in six weeks - advice?!?!

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific East coast Australia in six weeks - advice?!?!

Hi!
I've booked flights to Oz for six weeks beginning July 14th. I am flying to Sydney and travelling up the East Coast as far as Cairns.

Any advice for doing this in 6 weeks? What should I make a priority to see? Bus tours? What's temperatures am I looking at?

Thanks!!

Well, we did the predictable backpacker things between Brisbane and Cape Tribulation but they were all worthwhile:
- Sailing in the Whitsundays, lovely.
- Fraser island, fascinating but hire a 4wd and do it yourself, not the organised tour.
- Rainforest at Cape Tribulation/Daintree river trip etc

6 weeks is plenty for the East Coast.

Fraser Island is definitely a must. I second that, rent your own 4WD. You can go through one of the hostels and you'll be like 8-10 people in a 4WD. One of the best trips I did over there.

I did oz experience for the East coast and I really wouldn't recommend them for that. You can do Greyhound for half the price. The oz bus has good tour guides but that's about it. As far as booking things for you, I didn't find them that useful and you can do it yourself. Also as far as hop on/hop off goes. The buses were always full and I can never get the ones I wanted. Whereas Greyhound has like 10 buses a day in either direction.

I really liked Byron Bay, I did a surf trip there for a week called "Surfaris", they leave from Sydney too. If you want to try surfing I would recommend them. The Whitsundays sail is also a must. Diving or snorkeling in Cairns is also really worthwhile.

I don't remember now what else I did along the way, I stopped at a lot of places, a lot of partying on the east coast, it's a bit of a blur :) ... I have to look through my pictures.

I did the east coast in 4 weeks and didn't feel rushed at all so you have plenty of time :)

Must sees:

Byron Bay - party town but make sure you take a walk up to the Lighthouse - great scenery
Brisbane - Loved it, a city with a smally town feel I thought....good nightlife and great to just walk about in.
Noosa - I sadly didn't go here and totally regretted it!
Rainbow Beach - totally worth it just for the Carlo Sandblow (only stay one night)
Hervey Bay - which is the stop for Fraser Island - totally amazing!
Airlie Beach - which is just beautiful, and where you get your boat for Whitsundays - awesome! (I went on the Pride of Airlie)

I agree with the last post about the Oz experience - anyone I've met who did this regretted it. I went through a company called Wicked Travel (google them) and I got an amazing deal for both Fraser Island and Whitsundays and they give you vouchers for hostels all the way up the east coast. They'll organise your greyhound ticket for the bus too for $300 which is the same if you get it straight from greyhound.

Try not to get stuck in Sydney for too long - it's a cool place and easy to do - get on the road asap, you can always fly down when you get to Cairns. Check out webjet.com.au - and try to book well in advance!

Happy Travelling

Mumba, You missed nothing by missing Noosa. It is full of rich ex-Victorian posers and outrageously overpriced. Yhe best place on the Sunshine Coast is Mooloolaba - best beach within 200 km Brisbane and best Surf Club you will find anywhere!
