I stayed there when I was in Cairns last year but it was on a student congress package. I believe it's considered pricey for a hostel but I think you get what you pay for - security, clean rooms and cooking facilities, a very popular club just downstairs, cheap food and internet cafes nearby etc. Plus it's in a very prime location - right smack in the middle of town and 5-10 min by foot away from the mall and shopping area and the water. There's also a desk at the hostel where you can book trips to the rainforest, great barrier reef etc.
yah, gilligans is the main place, its got a huge nightclub downstairs. I stayed at a place 5 mins out of the centre called the beach house, it wasn`t on the beach, but was cool, has a pool, internet, bus into town every hour if ya dont feel like the walk. Was around $20 from memory, u get 1 free night if you stay for a week, well u did a year and a bit ago anyways. Plenty of construction work going around cairns, just general stuff on building sites, scaffolding etc..
i didnt stay at gilligans..
but OMG i loveddd going out there in cairns..
cairns is sooo good!
i lovedd it.. and gilligans was my fav place to go..
its verrrry nice and clean place to stay ..
i would reccomend it..
!! tell me how u liked your holiday!..
I didn't stay at Gillighans hostel but went to the bar there a few times i heard good reviews from people staying there.
i stayed 3 nights in Serpents hostel, its a bit further out but they have a shuttle bus. Its quieter but there is a bar and pool i liked it there.
A couple of years ago I stayed at Bel Air by the Sea hostel which was cheap and nice.
Also, I remember this website that gives you a good overview of most of the hostels in Cairns. Workwise your best bet is probably asking around in the bars or cafés, they were always looking for staff.
Gilligans fits your budget, met people who were out there and thought it was good. I stayed at Geckos which I think was $21 per night and was quite nice too.
