I'm going to be in shanghai for about 8 days (excluding travel in and out which is eating a huge chunk of time) this coming march. (Spring break during law school so long is not possible) I have never been to China or Asia before, and am traveling with 3 friends. What is feasible for a side trip outside of the city for a few days. We had ambitious plans before, but the massive size of this country is starting to become apparent. Beijing? Hong Kong??
-thanks so much
I stayed 5 months in Shanghai. Think 8 days is enough for the city and some fascinating places around Shanghai. In what are you interested?
There is so much to do there.....
Shopping at the fake market, shopping at Nanjing Road
Experience all the different tastes of the chinese and international restaurants
Experience the amazing Bar and Nightlife scene
some places around Shanghai, which are "close" to visit in 1 or 2 days:
Nanjing (historical places)
Suzhou (chinese gardens)
Hanghzhou (West lake scenery)
Theses places are all accessible by train (which is a very nice experience to travel in China). Your hotel can arrange tickets (if you do not speak Mandarin).
If you need a list of good restaurants, check out this website:
I can recommend different restaurants, depending on your tase.
I'd like to to recommend Shanghai Museum, Jade Buddha Temple, Nanjing Road. Nearby cities, like Huangzhou, Suzhou are nice options. you can alsp plan to visit Beijng.
Wish you good stay in China.
