Hi, I'm planning my trip to Chile. And this will be my first trip to South American continent. Can someone share with me your experience of renting a car and driving around in Chile? Is it as easy as in European countries or in North American countries? How is road condition there? How about highway traffic there?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Qin

Hi Qin, I'm Chilean, so I can tell you something about our highways. The road condition here it's better than anywhere else in Latin America, but still you cannot compare it to the ones in Europe, except for our private highways, that are very modern, but you have to pay to use them (there's an electronic device in the cars, so they charge you every month in case you used this highways, I don't know how it works with rented cars). Fuel is more expensive than anywhere else in Latin America, but it's cheaper than in Europe.
Driving it's very easy in the highways outside of the big cities, I have a lot of friends who have travelled around without even knowing spanish, and they never had a problem; as an opposite, driving in Santiago it's hard, first of all because of the all the traffic, and also because some main avenues change their sense of direction according to the hours, and finally, because this city has developed very fast during the last years, so there are a lot of new highways inside the city that not everyone knows, and they have very complicated traffic signs, that are hard to understand even for us.

Hope this information it's useful!!
