Travel Forums Asia any one any experience of working in Japan or Hong Kong?

Ive applied for visas in Hong Kong and Japan, and hope to go to one or the other to work for a year.

Does anyone have experience of this? I dont speak Mandarin or Japanese and hope to work in IT (but failing that, in any job).

Is this realistic?

Im working in japan at the moment. I dont know any japanese and would say that this restricts your job opportunities to teaching, or bar work in Roppongi. there are a few websites you can check out. www.gaijinpot.com has a section for IT jobs. I'm not qualified in IT so i havent had a good look, but the jobs say what degree of japanese/english level you need so that will give you an idea of whatsw available. good luck!

There are always lots of jobs teaching english in both of these countries. Even if that's not what you plan to do with your life, it's a good foot in the door with a sponsered visa, often an apartment setup etc.. Then if you study hard, after a year you may know enough of the language to expand your horizons into other jobs if you want to stay longer. For Japan do a google search for GEOS, Aeon, JET Program, and Interac, a few of the bigger companies that hire overseas for english teachers. Can't help you out with Hong Kong at all, since I've never worked there, but I would suspect it would be a place with more opportunities for someone who doesn't speak the language. Hong Kong is very much an international business center and English is widely spoken.
