Hi all - can anyone recommend some good local nightlife in Bangkok for my fiancee and I to check out. I've been to BKK many many times before but was either en route to another destination or in the Koh San Road area.

Can anyone recommend some decent nightclubs/lounges to check out that are not completely touristy.

Many thanks

PS I'm not talking about massage bars or anything like that!!!

I didn't spend heaps of time in Bangkok, but there were a few notable places.

I've heard of a club called MBK (I think? in Sukumvit, same as the shopping mall), haven't been but it seems to have built up a reputation, possibly more so to tourists.

Went to a club called Angel's, also in Sukumvit area, was a bit small but ok. Had a bit of a corny feel to it, where it seems many thais girls go there for Western guys etc., although the attention was nice. There was still a few tourists but not all that many, they were probably a minority. It was quite expensive, although the plus side is that there are more genuine people and it's not filled with prostitutes etc.

For a different kind of "night life", theres Patpong, which is renowned for its "sex shows", but they may try get more money out of you than you originally bargained for. Found 1 bar here as well, which was pretty neat, can't remember the name but it was in the main area and didn't really have any doors, a lot of tourists though.

Thats the little info I have. From what I gathered Sukumvit appeared to have a good amount of clubs in it, although it's hard to explore them as it seemed they were spread out.

You're probably best speaking to some young club-goer locals and see what they have to say. I did this in Chiang Mai and ended up getting a lift to all these clubs where there was not 1 other tourist which was a really cool experience :). Be mindful that they are referred to more as "discos" to the locals, and the more Thai-based clubs seemed to have many tables where people sit around in small groups and drink (often sharing a bottle of spirits), and people dance at those tables, where there weren't big dance floors as such.

Note that many clubs can be hidden due to the laws in Bangkok as well, so it may be very hard to find unless you know someone (for example, one of the ones in Chaing Mai I went to was in the middle of a big multi story car park that seemed deserted).

I actually had the most fun in Bangkok when we got so drunk we decided not to protest when the tuk tuk drivers started taking us somewhere other than our hotel at 1 am..

We ended up somewhere behind steel gates in a hidden bar that turned out to be soooo much fun we were crawling back to our hotel at 6 in the morning.. So you might wanna give it a chance even though it looks a lil shady :)
