Hey there,

im just wondering if anyone has any experience with volunteering in animal shelters/proection programs/rehab centres etc in africa or asia. I would love to go and work for a few weeks with some animals, big cats, monkeys, elephants etc...

are their any low cost programs or possibly free ones where you can work for shelter and board for a few weeks/month?

id love to hear your stories, experiences etc....

My cousin did about 7 or 8 months at a refuge for rehabilitating wildcats in Bolivia http://www.intiwarayassi.org/home.shtml that she utterly loved. If you want more info, message me and i'll see if I can put the two of you in touch....

Yes, I volunteered with the WAR foundation in Bangkok. We mainly looked after gibbons as there was quite a big black market trade in the animals (still is, unfortunately). They deal with all sorts of animals though from owls to turtles. A lot of tourists buy these animals in markets in Bangkok for the novelty value.

There is a rehab centre in Bangkok for the animals. Most are then shipped off to a private island to live in the wild. Some can't be, like Adam who I used to look after. He was blind because an eye infection was never diagnosed when he was a baby.

I know a few people who have been to the intiwarayassi place in bolivia, they loved it too, one has just gone back for another 4 months, they have monkeys there as well.

Not free - but perhaps someone else may be interested in this.

You can be a volunteer for Earthwatch, they have several options that involve working with animals in different countries.

In the U.S. the money you pay for this program is a tax deduction which makes the final price quite a bit less.

I've heard about an animal clinic and shelter in Luxor, Egypt. They take care of the miserable beasts that draw the caleches, the tourist coaches. I wasn't there myself, but I know that cost of living in Egypt is very low. You can get by on less than 200 USD per month.
