I am after some advice on finding work in Australia!?
I am arriving in Sydney in May 08 and will need to find work ASAP as i would have been travelling else where for a few months.
I am happy to do Bar work to get away from my office work.
Is it easy to find basic work? Should arrange work before i leave the UK?
I will be arriving in Sydney but am happy to travel around backpacked there last year for a couple of months.
Any advice on the job front would be great thanks
To work in a bar you would have had to completed an RSA certificate. I think these are only 1 or 2 days and cost around $100 (i think). You could use a site dedicated to part-time/casual work such as hippo.com.au, to search for something before you get to Aussie. If you stay at one of the big hostels they night have an in-house job agency with something to start you off with. You could also post an ad on sydney.gumtree.com.au before you arrive, saying you'll be looking for work. I've used this site to find work before and have always got decent, genuine replies.
Just a couple of ideas anyway, good luck and have fun
It's very easy to find both bar work and office work, the latter obviously paying more.
I wouldn't bother even trying to organise something before you left. For a start, if people want bar staff they want them to start pretty much immediately. Plus, with the abundance of work, there's no hurry.
My best advice is to just lie to you get the job.
Construction work pays of well. I worked with demolition(Tearing down walls. Hard work, but even a monkey could do it). Lied on my qualifications(three years of experience, Right)and i didnt even have a bluecard, which you have to have to get construction work. I just said i forgot it, they told me to bring it the next day and forgot all about it.
I ended up earning 1000 dollars a week, and would get a raise to 1200AUD if i had stayed longer.
Also meet people who lied and said they would stay for at least six months or whatever the employer required, and then just took of when they had saved up some money, but i didnt have the conscience.
And dont worry too much about getting caught. Generally, the worst thing that can happen is that they fire you.
you dont NEED a RSA cert but some employers want you to have one. big companies who have alot of bars or something, like the ALH chains (who are owned by woolworths) have so many rules n shit that its a nightmare to work there, but the pay is good. i fyou just walk into bars n pubs n clubs with a CV and give it to the manager they might have something for you... you can call and email them your CV and youll prob get a response, more likely if you have the intention to stya for a a few months...
