I'd definitely recommend a hostel: the atmosphere is far better. For clean and more quiet hostels, you pretty much can't go wrong with YHA hostels; these usually get a more varied mix of visitors than other hostels as well, and at 37 you'll almost certainly not be the oldest one there. In Sydney, the Glebe Point YHA is a particular favourite of mine. Not quite as spick and span as their "flagship" hostels Railway Square and Central, but smaller and cozier and with way more atmosphere. Awesome rooftop lounge with hammocks and barbecue, and very nice rooms. The only thing which sucks about this hostel are the showers, but I've always gladly endured them.
If you have the money, definitely no reason not to splurge on a single room; I've done so myself quite frequently, and you still meet people easily enough in the lounge area and the kitchen.
P.S. Please lay off the all-caps - it's the equivalent of continuously shouting, and considered rather rude behaviour.
