Backpackers island?

Travel Forums Asia Backpackers island?

I have been reading about the islands in Thailand and keep reading how certain islands used to be backpacker islands, but have since been developed and now have more expensive hotels rather than cheap beach hut accomodation. Does anyone know the current islands that are catered for backpackers. I see Ko Lanta is but again have read its becoming more touristy.

Thanks

Hello Buddha!

I will be going to Koh Tao in January, and have been vigorously researching everything (I love the planning part!).

Koh Tao seems to be the cheapest place (as opposed to Koh Pha Ngan, and Koh Samui - even phuket!).

For many places, if you are diving, you can get accommodation for about 200baht/nite with the same shop.

I'll be paying roughly 300$AUD for 10 dives + 3 nights accommodation, which I think is a good deal!

If you're looking for the whole £2 per night bargain basement backpacker on the beach style thing, you might be better off looking at the beaches near Krabi on the mainland.
