Hi everyone,

Me and my friends are going to be in New York this winter for Christmas and New Years and we are so excited! But we're not sure what to expect about an American winter since our winters in Australia are nothing compared to theirs!

We're going on a round the world trip so obviously we don't have room to pack big thick coats, but we want to spend a LOT of time in New York going out to clubs and stuff at night. We're just wondering what to do for warmth, can we get by without a big coat or will it be best to buy a cheapish one there and throw it out before we leave? So many clothes, so little room... We have like polar fleece jumpers but they don't really go with high heels and fancy clothes! Any advice would be great!

New York will be cold for sure. but if u are goin to clubs and generaly indoor stuff u wont need a heavy winter coat. and hoenstly - the winters here arent bad until later in January and february. December isnt that bad. UNLESS u plan on watchin the Ball drop on New years outside u will need a heavy coat!

if u have somethin not so heavy - pack that.

buying a winter jacket in NYC wil be expensive - especially just to throw it away. if u decide to buy something buyt it before u reach the city - it will surely cost less.

I think the key to staying warm isn't the coat, but the cover for your extremities. Get a good set of gloves/mitts, a nice hat to cover your ears and a couple pairs of warm socks. They don't take much space and are definately key.

As for buying a jacket, check out discount stores like Target or Walmart. You should be able to get a warm jacket for a good price. Depending on how petite you are, you might want to check out the boys section. Children's jackets are less expensive, and if you are 5 foot 7 or under, you can usually find a good boy's winter jacket that fits for a fraction of the price of a woman's jacket. (Amazing what a man picks up when he dates a frugal girl, eh?)

Thanks guys for the advice, very helpful. We are off to England after New York which will also be freezing so we might buy a coat and keep it for England also. We can't wait to get over there, and we are planning on being outdoors for New Years although i heard that it's crazy busy! A lot of people have told me that it won't be as cold in December, which is good because we need some time to adjust!!

Thanks again for the great info
