I am planning a 45 day backpacking trip in SA from june to july. It's winter down there so I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations on good jackets that will keep me warm because i read that its really cold during the night.

Thanks alot!

I'm assuming by SA you mean South Africa? or do you mean South America? At any rate, the best thing to do is layer up and take a warm fleece along with a lightweight waterproof raincoat, the kind that stuffs into a its own pocket. Then you just layer up your clothes: t-shirt, l/s shirt, button up, jumper, fleece then raincoat. That has always worked for me. If you're talking minus 0, then I would take some long johns as well and take a heavier raincoat, but something that still stuffs well. There are plenty of synthetic down coats that stuff down small too. But my best advice is to layer it up! good luck and keep warm.

Depends how far south you are. Its bloody cold in patagonia at that time of year. Think winter sport weather - it can be below freezing. I bought as I needed down there but I'd start with a good fleece or fall jacket.

Hey

Just saw ur post, know you prob won't be looking again but someone like me might!! I'm going to Sth Amer in May myself and am planning on bringing a Columbia '3 in 1' jacket. Its a ski jacket but the fleece inside is removable so you have a super warm jacket or a fleece or a light rain jacket...

;)
