I am not going to be in Costa Rica at this time but I was there for a month this summer.
if you are at all into rafting go take a trip on the Pacuare River. it was by far the best thing I did in my 4 weeks there this summer. the company I went with was Rios Tropicales they where fantastic guids and you wont regret the trip.

the arenal volcano was also quite cool the hot springs where neat and we got to watch the volcano erupt while sitting in them.

the osa peninsula was really interesting as well. they had free flying mcawas and we got to see whales. I believe November is a good time to see whales in Costa Rica but I am not 100% sure.

definitely go to a few nature parks. also if you are going to be in the central citys for a few days and have the option of heridia or san jose I would go for heridia it is smaller and easier to walk around.
however the nightlife was better in san jose.

it is easy to take the buss from one to the other however it is not recommended to do so after dark. cabs are cheep so it is best just to take a cab. it is important to have good directions from your hotel when taking a cab as they do not have street signs and everything is done more or less by land marks.

if in heridia and looking for some good food there is a great place called cafe brit that has both American style and Costarican style food just beside the central churchyard / fountain park thing.

I hope this is helpfull if you need more jsut ask.
seriously tho pacuare river rafting best thing ever.

Wow, what great advise. May I bother you for a great, but inexpensive hotel. I read about the hostels and they got great reviews and we about $10 per night. What is your opinion?

that sounds like a good deal

I only stayed in a hostel one night and it was 14$ just outside of heridia. in all honesty I didn't book the hotels ect I was with a volunteer group so they took care of the recommendations and I am not sure how much any of them where per night.
