I will be moving to Perth from the US for approximately 9 months beginning 12/1 for an internship/work study. Are there any websites in Perth like craigslist.com to find cheap cars, apartments for rent, etc? Is there a way to open an Australian bank account while still in the US to avoid currency/transfer issues? Has anyone gotten a credit card while working in AUS? Can anyone recommend a cheap hotel in Perth/Freemantle for me to stay until I get on my feet?
Thanks for all the help. I can't believe that my visa is in hand. Now the airline tickets, hotel for a week or so until I get on my feet, rental car..
word of advice - pack your bathers for summer - smokin hot!!
A good website for accomodation is www.realestate.com.au, search under wa and rental properties. best to do that as soon as you can as with the resources boom here it may take you a while.
cheap cars - www.carsales.com.au or www.carsguide.com.au
not sure about banks though best to hop onto a few institution websites, ie: ANZ, Westpac, CWB, NAB (dont recommend bankwest - we call them wank best over here - there fees are shocking)
dont know about cheap hotel but the Esplanade is good to stay at.
have a great move and a great time being a resident "sandgroper"
Congratulations for the visa! Perth is a great city, I'm sure you'll like it. Sorry, not much help with the hostels (have been told to avoid places in Northbridge, as it's a dodgy area at night) but gumtree Perth is probably the most similar to craigslist. Good luck with the move and getting settled.
realestate.com.au is very good im a norwegian backpacker myself and hardly know a soul here, so give a shout when you're down here cheers
you can look on www.quokka.com.au or somthing like that, thats a place where you can find 2nd hand, everything, cars n stuff, maybe even rental properties!
northbridge isnt that dodgy at night really, if you wanna party then id stay there, since youd cut costs with taxis n stuff... there are just alot of ppl there at night, alot of drunk ppl and ppl on drugs n stuff... if something is gonna happen, its most likely gonna happen there just cos thats where all the ppl are and the ppl are drunk...
We moved to Perth recently (for a 4 year stay) and were surprised by how many rental properties are advertised in the free newspaper every week.
If you like the night life - stay near to Perth. We are in the northern suburb and it is pretty quiet on an evening/weekend.
It's also getting very hot out here and February I think is the warmest month so bear this in mind when packing!
Thanks everyone for the great tips...and keep 'em coming!
72 hours until the move!
