I agree with Mike. If you have the time, work with the NHS for your anti-malarial prescription. Several anti-malarials are effective in both Viet Nam and Thailand. Doxycycline is a good choice and inexpensive. It is also available over the counter in both countries. Mefloquine (Larium) may also be available as an OTC in some places but I wouldn't rely on that availability everywhere. Larium is also known for it's more severe side effects in some people. Malarone will not be available over the counter and will require a prescription in both countries. If you do find Malarone over the counter then, personally, I would consider it to be a fake medication and steer clear of purchasing it.

Definitely speak with the physicians about which drug will be best for your travel plans. With that said, Doxy is cheap, safe, effective and can be taken for up to 2 years duration. If you choose to purchase your prophylactic meds in Viet Nam and Thailand, be sure to obtain them from reputable chemists/pharmacies. There is a flood of fake medications for very low prices in SE Asia, Africa and many other places.

I got Doxy from my doctor and it cost me grand total of £7 for 2 month supply. Been taking it for about a month now - a little bit of nausea to begin with but that was because l hadnt eaten enough before taking it and didnt drink enough water since that nothing whatsoever.
