Gerard,
I vote you spend NYE in, surprise! VEGAS! We have a terrific free firewworks dispaly over the Strip. Over 300,000 people attended last year. Or you can party all night at the Fremont Street Experience. This year starring the Doobie Brothers and the Bangles. Try here. All the hotels have a special show on NYE. The downside is that it is expensive to rent a room over this holiday. If you can get into a hostel, then it is not too bad. Try Hostel.

Now Yellowstone Nat'l Park in the winter. I vote March. It will still be covered in snow, but hopefully not so brutally cold. Try these guys and see if it will fit into your schedule. Good luck.

If you don't go to Vegas for your New Years' party, then also consider camping out on Colorado Blvd with the other 1 million crazies who do so while waiting for the next day's Tournament of Roses Parade. It's a crazy scene--but the accomodations vary from those in sleeping bags on the curb to those in RVs lined up on the route to those who have booked the local hotels so they only have to walk a block or two to the parade route.

Check out this guy's site, where he shows some pictures of those camping out along the parade route--as well as the pictures of the "Rose Bowl", which is a American football game that is the reason for the parade and the previous night's party

P.S. The best thing about this party and parade--they are both all free (although the tickets to the football game are extremely expensive). I know the Vegas party (outside with the fireworks) is also free--but the hotel and gambling are not. (although that's also a great party--and I've been to both of them).

Enjoy
