Definitely after the first month. £1000 is AUD 2300, which is less than half the required amount of money to have available on a WHV. Not that they ever check, but they didn't pluck the AUD 5000 out of thin air either - it's about the minimum amount any backpacker will need to have available.
If you can save up some more money before setting off, I'd highly recommend doing so. It's much easier to earn money at home than with the low-wage backpacker jobs you're likely to find in Australia. (And given Christmas coming on, you should be able to find a place that could use some extra capacity for a couple of hours a week.)

Actually got £8000 saved but only really wanna use £1000 of it if i can cos Ive just bought a house back home so SHOULD be saving my pennies not travelling across the world. lol. Any ideas on the best places to work in Oz on a short term basis?

Hey I dont reckon u needs loads,

i know a few ppl out there, and a few ppl that have been...

you can earn good money out there, my friends got a job in a call centre a was taking was $22 a hour, so aint too bad.

also he works places where he got all acommodation and food included...so hardest thing is just getting out there!!
