Living and Working in Melbourne for Christmas?

Hey all

recently had my plans for Christmas in NSW trashed, so I've been thinking instead of going to Melbourne for the holidays. Can anyone reccomend a good hostel to stay at? I'd like to get a job in something like retail / bar / hospitality. I've got plenty of experience but no RSA. Any ideas on how much work would be available? And how about flats? I think my friends lived in St. Kilda when they were there ... but that was ages ago.

Thanks for any info :)

Del

I can recommend a great hostel in melbourne. Its called the Greenhouse, and is situated on Flinders Lane which is in the city centre. If you're looking for retail work, once you get there you should wander the streets, there'll be ads up in windows of shops at this time of year looking for seasonal staff. Although it could be a tricky time of year to secure a flat, try melbourne.gumtree.com.au for listings :)

An RSA is mandatory if you are going to work in hospitality - that is work behind a bar or a bottle shop, waitering not necessary.

RSA course are done through TAFE's and cost around $80.00. Not 100% sure but think you need a RSA for each state, as liquor licencing laws are slightly different.

If you're in Melbourne, and don't mind doing waitressing, Lygon Street is probably your best bet. There's a chunk of the street absolutely full of restaurants, and it should just be a case of wandering into a few before you find somewhere that'll give you work.
