....website has had a make over. It's fecking horrible. It's been made significantly less user friendly and has several really crappy parts about it, and very little in the way of improvement at all, in my opinion this far. The changes are also making my eyes hurt as the colours/sizes are dodgy.

Please, please, please, Sam and Peter, f you are planning an upgrade/refresh of the TP site anytime soon, don't do anything like that!

On an aside, it might be great for TP, as there is talks of a mass exodus on pretty much every branch there, so a large chunk may decamp onto TP.

Well they improved the quoting function.
That is a big improvement in my opinion.
I used to not bother to use the old one because it was so cumbersome.

It was horrible 6 years ago when I last went there - it's not surprising that it still is.

Ok, I don't really visit TT very often, so I'm struggling to see the changes - is that column on the right new? I'm interested to know what in particular has upset people. Nothing like learning from others' mistakes ;)

I think it has actually improved.
Not just the quoting function but the layout of the page that shows the branches u can go into. Now u can see all the continents without going into anything and just have to hit a drop down menu to choose a country. Before u had to go into a drop down menu to see the continents and then another to choose a country. So there is one step less now.

I think what irritates people is the inconvenience of having to find out how to use the new things instead of just knowing where to go without thinking about it. I generally feel cranky for this reason when the yahoo people change the layout of the email.

I see what you mean Rich. There's a few disgruntled members over there; invite them over! :) I'll buy you a beer for every 'convert', lol.

I think the real mistake here is the quite wide right hand column. I know Lonely Planet has been losing tons of money online so I imagine this is just another attempt at plugging that hole, but it's quite a wide border and if you resize your screen to small widths it's about half the screen size! The content is being rather drowned out and I think the blue background on text doesn't help much (although personally I find much of their design quite pretty, it might not be equally functional).

One thing I see a lot of people are missing is the 'today' function. How did that work? We might just have to implement that here on Travellerspoint as it seems to be useful and well liked ;)

I see one of the changes they made is also something that we've discussed before here on TP forums regarding which threads show highest up. They've now gone with the solution we've always had (most recently replied to goes top). That's interesting because I know in discussions in the past people have requested it the way LP had it. Of course if you use the All Threads view here you can sort by replies which I assume LP will probably implement pretty quick. They have a ton of good developers that should be able to pick up some of the most asked for things and implement.

I knew that comment was going to get me into trouble :)

I actually liked the fact at LP that the threads were sorted by when they were started.

LP had so many visitors that threads got buried relatively fast, and the above feature enabled every thread an equal chance to get a reply.

What absoluty sucked was that it was so hard to find threads you had replied to again, which is IMO the reason the feature "most recently replied to goes top" was requested by users and thus implemented. A better solution would IMO have been the one virtualtourist.com and Yahoo!Answers use where you can track your own replies and discussions through your profile.

Ad for ideas on how to improve TP, I think the Admins should look into some features virtualtourist has. I really like their "guidebook" function and I'm absolutely in awe with the "noticeboard".
The one thing were VT sucks however is that you cannot post urls, quote or mark up. It is much worse than LP ever was. I really like TP in this regard! Keep it that way!

Hello - defector over here. I'm one of the disgruntled LP users.

"I actually liked the fact at LP that the threads were sorted by when they were started."
That was the default. Before the 'upgrade', you were able to change this to 'last reply'

"What absoluty sucked was that it was so hard to find threads you had replied to again, which is IMO the reason the feature "most recently replied to goes top" was requested by users and thus implemented."
Nope, that's what the very missed 'Today' page did. It had links of the top 20 or so threads that you recently replied to.

"One thing I see a lot of people are missing is the 'today' function. How did that work? We might just have to implement that here on Travellerspoint as it seems to be useful and well liked ;)"
read above

Nope. That drop down was there before the 'upgrade'.

"is that column on the right new?"
Yes

Hold on to that beer Sam I Am, I'm still hoping that LP will clean up its act and tidy up these mistakes.
