Thanks Sam:)
I will keep an open mind about it since so many of my friends also seem to be going there.

I used to love Facebook, but one day I went to a party and a casual acquaintance - who's my Facebook friend - started asking me all kinds of question about in-depth details of my life. I realized she'd deduced stuff from things I'd put on Facebook. After the alarm bells subsided, I decided to use Facebook very sparingly.

Anyway, I prefer TP.

I haven't joined facebook - tway's experience illustrated one of the reasons why i won't join it. i'm quite a private person and my profile on Tp is about as much personal info as I want to share about myself!

i don't see what's wrong with keeping in touch with people via email- i can't really think of anyone i am not in touch with who i would like to be in touch with. A lot of people's 'friends' are, it seems, not really friends at all and in some cases are barely even aquaintances. to me the site seems like a glorified popularity contest.

Do people think facebook is a fad or will it actually continue to grow?

Personally I'm staying as far away as possible from sites which have the explicit purpose of catching relationships between people in databases, ready to be datamined. I'm old-fashioned and still value this thing called privacy. (And that's not so much privacy from people who would be my "friends" on such a site, but rather from the people who run that site, the advertisers they'll give access to their database, the governments who'll demand access to that very same database, and the blackhats who'll see this whole juicy database filled with identity-thefty goodness and know they'll need only a single tiny security hole to get access to it all.)

Plus, facebook is evil with their whole walled garden model. The web is open! (That's also what will make it fail in another year or two when the next big social networking site comes along to replace it.)

Yeah, the privacy thing worries me too.
Not because of the government and datamining but because of the reasons Tway and Bex mentioned.
That thought crossed my mind when people on this thread were saying how popular the Facebook is. But the privacy risk would not be more than it is here on TP would it? A person would just have to make sure all personal details are given out via private messages?

My experience is that there is a rush to set up a myspace site by all and sundry, but little interaction between friends.

I think they are great if you have a heap of spare time or are a schoolkid and you want to catch up with your mates after school. Apart from that, no-one I know has the time to fart-arse around with these things.

I totally agree- I have a friend who constantly updates his status with things like 'at the pub tonight', 'am feeling tired today.' etc - I mean, who can be bothered?! To me there seems to be a certain amount of arrogance attached to these sites too in that people are assuming that others are interested in the trivial details of their daily lives, their photos from the pub on saturday night etc.

You can put as much or as little info on your facebook profile as you like. Some people write tehre whole life story, while others just have their name. So really its up to you.

Here's a little editorial about Facebook and their privacy practices.

This story may be of interest too.
