So, is there going to be another photo contest for the 2008 calender?
It's almost december, so I guess this is probably going to be impossible.
I promise I will be buy one....;)

I'm afraid not.

No shortage of nice pictures of course, but last year's experiment didn't really turn out as well as hoped. We learned quite a bit about the "calendar business", but also now know that such a project takes quite a lot of time to do nicely and quite a lot of sales to actually break even :)

It's a real shame really as something like this requires momentum as well and of course not having a calendar after the inaugral year is not smart. As Peter mentioned, we learned a few things about the calendar business.... the hard way. One issue with a calendar is the short time frame you have to sell them. What we decided we really need is a partner that will also function as a sales outlet. So an organization like Oxfam for example that has outlets all around the world. Proceedings from the calendar would then go to that organization as well so it has to be charitable.

Having said that, there are a few other ideas I might as well throw out there.

1. go for something with a longer shelf life like for example a pack of 12 postcards. Production costs for these would be much lower than a calendar and we could sell them for years, not for 2 months or so. Kind of boring too?
2. we could still run a competition for best photos and offer prizes for that. That required a lot of manual work last year because of the short time frame we gave ourselves, so we couldn't do anything automated to sift out some of the best photos. If we do something like this it would most likely be monthly kind of setup where the best photos get votes throughout the month. At the end of the year all 100 or so photos that got most votes get a special roundup for the best set of the year. If we can find a calendar partner for say two years in a row at least then the monthly winners could also get automatic placement in the calendar.

Any other ideas?
