Hello all, i've been living in NZ for the past six months. i've been to the south island and loved it and have been living and working in Auckland for the past few months, i know all about the JAFA thing but i like it. anyway i want to see more of the north island as i've only got 5 months left here and want to make the most of my time here and the summer. any suggestions of places to go? things to do? really would appreciate replies.
also has anyone done a TEFL course and used it? i'm planning on going to asia and south america and was wondering how people got on with working etc. thanks again
Wellington is nice for a bit of culture and the arts. Check out Te Papa, the museum of NZ for lots of NZ heritage and informative exhibits. Rotorua is good for Maori culture and is the home of Zorbing which is a lot of fun I also like the Hawkes Bay region (Napier/Hastings) for the fruit orchards and vineyards and Napier is a seaside art deco town. I haven't been to the Coromandell but I have had it recommended to me as a nice lazy place with talented local artisans. You could also look into going north of Auckland - I think people often forget anywhere north of Auckland even exists lol!! Most of these places should give you great summer weather , although Wellington is known for being a bit windy. Enjoy wherever you choose to go!
further to the above, i would recommend the following:
-bay of islands and cape reinga
- white island on the east coast (reached via whakatane)
Greater auckland itself has some beautiful beaches and scenery so if you have a car or are able to hire one there are plenty of options.
Bex is right on.. some beautiful towns up north. Mangonui, Hohora Heads, Kerikeri. The Bay of Islands is great. If you are a diver check out the Poor Knights Islands - best cold water diving you are likely to find.
Cape Reigna is lovely and the beaches on the Kerikeri peninsula are deserted and well worth a visit.
The Tongario Crossing is a nice day hike and pretty too.
Hope that helps.
Seconding (thirding?) suggestions above, particularly the Tongariro crossing, can I also add :
- if you're a civilised type, Napier - for art deco architecture, and a Hawkes Bay wine tour.
- some kind of whitewater activity around rotorua - the sledging is particularly exciting.
Hello! I really recommend the coromandel, it was a great place to spend some time. My boyfriend really loved Paihia, but I didn't make it there myself. The Bay of Plenty was really nice as well!
Thanks alot for your replys people, think i'll find a few things to do now. hope you're all well
