I'm thinking of flying to Hanoi in North Vietnam from bangkok but I haven't got a Vietnam Visa yet, so I was wondering if it's possible to get a Vietnam visa in Bangkok and if so how much does it cost?
Alternatively, is it possible to get a Vietnam Visa on the internet and if so does anyone have the web address?
Another possibility is that I may go to Laos first and then onto Vietnam overland, so does this make any difference to your visa requirements?
You can get your VN visa in BKK. You can let your GH do it for you, a travel shop or do it yourself. You will pay a bit more, but avoids going the VN embassy twice. The VN visa price varies country to country. Here in the US I was charged $45 for a 30 day visa. I got on in Phnom Penh for $28. In Singapore you will pay $60 if you need it in one day. Fast costs more when getting a VN visa. I have not bought one in BKK, but it should be 1,500 baht for regular service, 2,500 bt if you need it in one day.
There is one other option. You can do a visa on arrival. There are many travel agencies in VN that offer visa on arrival, but I found this one reliable and cheaper than the others. At $48, it is competitive with the BKK price. Hope this helps.
Can i ask further about entering Vietnam on foot. I'm not going to be flying into Vietnam, i plan on hitting the Bavet boarder. will the options you gave about visas above be alright for boarder crossing as welll?
I have crossed the Moc Bai/Bavet border at least 6 times, both ways. You still have to have a VN visa in hand before you arrive at the border. The cheapest place I have found to obtain your VN visa is in Phnom Penh. Lucky, Lucky Motorcycle Rentals on Monivong Blvd. provides the fastest, cheapest VN visa: $28, one day.
