The only location in Europe where I know of age to be an issue for hostels is in Bavaria in Germany, where they won't let you in unless you're under 26. There might be other places with an age limit, but I at least haven't heard of them (which imo is a very good thing; makes for a much more interesting mix if there's guests staying aged all the way from 18 to 80).

sometimes its good, other times its kinda random to have a 60yr old guy in a room full of 20 somthing girls lol we had one time, a sth african guy who was about 60 in our room in italy... it wouldve been ok if he didnt SNORE like it was going outta fashion (tho thats just a hazard you need to be prepared for in a shared hostel room!) and if he wasnt a complete arrogant knob lol he called me unaustralian because i dont watch rugby much (im from the state where the main football code is aussie rules), and he also told the girl i was with to be careful in prague cos its dangerous, and he preferred to stay out of "those communist countries" in preference of the UK and the US (doesnt explain why he was in italy!). He also told me he had no desire to go to australia whatsoever because he doesnt like the ppl lol but when i responded that i also had no desire to go to sth africa (i do, i lied, he was an arse lol) because there are other plcaes id rather go first, he got offended. was good for a laugh later on... has little to do with the fact that he was old, just the fact that he was an idiot :)

That sounds like a guy who was 70 something and whom I had the pleasure of sharing a room with in Darwin a few years ago. Not much sleep those two nights and it wasn't from lack of trying! But like you say, that's just part of the deal with hostels. He couldn't really help it, unlike the couple having sex in the bunk bed above mine in a hostel in Honolulu a few years earlier....

I'll be in Italy and Greece next summer and will turn 44 in Venice. The only age restrictions I've come across is some of the hostels in Rome have an upper limit of 35. I found a Rome hostel that doesn't have a problem with old ladies like me so it's all good
