Hi there, I plan to go for a year round Asia, I will be going to the following countries:
Will this be enough, or if it will be enough, how long could I concievably last with that much wonga? Flights will be already paid for btw.
You'll last ages! Obviously it depends upon your style of travel, but if you are an average backpacker type, you should be able to make that last maybe 18months reasonably easier, and longer is certainly not impossible.
For comparison, in 2005-06, I spent roughly that sum on 16months travel (of which about 4mths were in SEA), which included all tickets & visa's etc (including a couple of wild and illogical backtracks and detours), 3months in Japan, the football World Cup inc. tickets and 2 major weddings amongst others. And whilst i wasn't spending like crazy, i certainly wasn't counting pennies like mad. So with a little planning and even allowing for a good blow out or two, you should come out of your year with a change.
I spend about $700/month while I am in SEA. I am a non drinking veggie, but your budget should not be that much higher. Accomodations average under $10/night for all countries except Singapore. You will be there less than a week, so it won't alter your budget very much. Eat where the locals do and you will under $10/day easily. Transport is cheap in all the countries in SEA. Buses are usually cheaper that the train. If you really want to economize, take the 'chicken bus' rather that the tourist bus.
Kieran, you should be able to stay in SEA at least 18 months if you are conscientious about staying within your budget. Take a notebook and keep track of daily expenses: where you stayed, where you ate, who you met that day, photos taken, etc. Put e-mail addresses in there and tips from other travellers that you chat with. Ask others if they have been to your next destination. You should get good advice from fellow BPers that have already 'been there, done that'.
Have great time bumping around SEA.
I would happily live in this part of Asia for two years on that much money. If you are really budget concious than it shouldn't be a problem. If you want to go and spend a little more and not worry too much, then a year and a half will still be possible. If you want to live it up, than a your money will still last a year.
If you just went to the Philippines you could easily last for 3 years on that amount. £3 a night accomodation, 30p for a beer, 8p for the bus, 10p for a bowl of rice and dressing. It is really cheap indeed. Or you could make it last 1-2 years and live like a king!!
To put it in perspective, a friend of mine who is filipino works in a pharmacy there and she earns £2 per day, so that is £728 a year in wages as she works 6 days a week.
