hey hope someone can help me out with some info... I am going to nz in january but was thinking that if at all possible i would love to stay and work for at least a year. I have a degree in nutrition and business administration and my boyfriend would meet me there and he has a degree in computer science plus a lot of experience working in the field. Is there a demand for jobs with the education we have? Is it a long process or difficult for americans to get visas in nz? all the help would be apreciated, thanks!

Hi

I don't think either of you will have any problem at all finding jobs in NZ. There is a skills shortage is many fields at the moment; I also have a qualification in IT and found a job within 3 days of arriving in NZ. I was also able to pick and choose between jobs -something that I have certainly never experienced here in the UK! Have a look at seek.co.nz for jobs in various fields; for IT recruitment I used Candle, who are based in the centre of Auckland.

I'm not sure about the visa process for US citizens but I know when i applied for my whv I got it within a week.

Hi,

You definately can get a working holiday visa to NZ if you are a US citizen.. too bad it's not the same the other way around! But I don't know how long it takes to get a visa.

Bex is right, you shouldn't have a problem finding a job in NZ. There's always fruit picking!

Good luck!

hi.

i was thinking of the same idea as rockstar33's.

i am planning to visit nz with a tourist visa and then if i match the environment then might as well look for a job there.
how strict is the govt? any idea on how OZ perceive it?

thanks a lot.

Very very badly. Do not try to work without a visa that allows working (e.g., not a tourist visa). When you'll be caught (they do a lot of checking), you'll be exported from the country (and if you're unlucky, in Oz, get to visit their infamous detention camps) and won't be allowed back in for many years.

I would NEVER try and go to NZ (or Australia) without a working visa if you are intending to work. Like Sander said, New Zealand is very strict about visa's and border security. If they even sniff that you are there on a tourist visa and you intend to work then they will deport you back to your home country without you even stepping foot outside the airport. It is also especially hard when you are from SE Asia because a lot of people from China/Philipines (excuse the spelling)/HK/Thailand/Vietnam etc do the same thing and they will naturally suspect you. They even go to restaurants and check whether they have the correct visas and if they don't then they get deported.

BTW I got all this from watching a NZ TV series called Border Security and Borderline. It's very interesting.
