12 days around Mumbai - suggestions?

Travel Forums Asia 12 days around Mumbai - suggestions?

Hey guys,

I'm flying from Melbourne -> Mumbai on 30th Jan, and basically have around 12 days (11 full days) before I head to Kathmandu.

I like to soak in the atmosphere a bit so I'd occupy at least 4 of those days in Mumbai (what should i do here?), then go to 1 or 2 max more destinations. Question is where? I know Goa is the obvious one but from what I've heard it sounds like it's a bit overrun by tourists :P

I'm a 22 y/o male like a bit of adventure/partying/beach/interested in learning about cultures. I'll already be seeing Delhi/Agra area after I go to Nepal.

Any suggestions would be appreciated :D

Hello Erik:)

I spent around 10 days in Mumbai but that was around 10 years ago.
U could have tea and pistacio cookies in the Taj Mahal intercontinental hotel while looking over the bay.
Also u could go to the beach in Mumbai. There is plenty to look at there. Lots of people hanging out.
U can also get a boat to an island from the pier near the bay near the Taj Mahal hotel.
I also went out of the city to a beach resort where Indians go on holiday. U can rent a little wooden house beside the beach there.
Anway it has been such a long time and I cant remember enough details. Perhaps Arif will fill them in. He lives in Mumbai. Here is his profile link. If us send him a private message he might come and comment on this thread.

For accomodation u could choose one of the following.
Dirt Cheap: Salvation Army Hostel in Colaba
Nice but good value:

Hello Erik:)

Mel was in Mumbai some ten years back but she still remembers quite a lot:) Hope she comes again very soon

Since u have 4 days in Mumbai u can have three short excursions from Mumbai:

1. Visit Elephanta island which has some ancient structures of cultural interest. Regular ferry service is available from the boat jetty near the Gateway of India.
2. Visit the Murud-Janjira area which has a clean beach and a fortress in the sea.
3. Visit the beautiful hill station of Matheran which is very close to Mumbai. A narrow gauge toy train takes u from Neral to Matheran. It is worth a ride and the hill station is unique as vehicular traffic is banned, the only option left is to either walk or take a ride on the numerous horses available

After finishing Mumbai u can follow the Hampi, Bangalore, Mysore, Ooty route which can be done in the eight days remaininf for u

Do let me know if u need more info:)

I think Arif has put it very well for u.I comletely agree with him.
May be while in Mumbai,U could stop at some suburban railway station during peak hours and see the sea of humanity pass by.
This is a sight u may not ever experience again.Gives u a new perspective to life and how the will to survive can make men so resilient.
Have fun..

You could go to Aurangabad and from there visit the Ajanta and Ellora caves, both are really beautiful sites and less touristy.
And if it's not too far for you, I'd suggest Varanasi. Although it's very touristy it's really laid back and has a special atmosphere.
