I'll be in Thailand in December and January and want to visit a few islands while I'm there, staying at budget accomodation. I've heard though, that during this period it can sometimes be pretty difficult trying to find a cheap place to stay on some of the more popular islands.

Is this true and if so, which islands are the best to visit during December and January in terms of ease of finding accomodation? Are there any less popular islands that people would recommend?

Also, how much can I expect to pay for cheap bungalows at places like Ko Samui and Ko Phi-Phi?

Ko Pha Ngan is a reasonable bet at that time of the year as there is soo much budget accommodation there that even in peak season you'll get a room somewhere.

Prices start at around 80B for a shac through to an average of 200/300B for a comfortable and clean bungalow. On Samui its a little more, depending on which beach you choose. Phi Phi is considerably more expensive and over xmas-new year you could end up sleeping on the beach if you don't have a reservation at a budget place.

Hope that helps

Cheers for the advice.

Are there any particular beaches on Ko Pha Ngan which you recommend?

During December and January, the west coast has a lot better weather.
Go to Koh Phi Phi but it is quite expensive because the island is too small and very beautifu. Alternative is Krabi area (not island) or Koh Lanta.
