I'm looking for a digital SLR camera. I've been informed that Nikon D70 is a good one. Now I realized that D70 might be over-qualified for me, as I am still learning (not a professional) so it will also be too expensive for me. So, I wonder if there are any digital SLR cameras (with manual options - is it always available) not as sophisticated nor expensive as D70 but good enough for a hobbyist learner...
So far I've been using a fully manual SLR film-camera and want to invest in a digital SLR camera but don't want to spend as much as D70 with versatility I am not yet able to use optimally.
Any advice would be helpful.
There are only two "cheap" digital slr camera's on the market at this moment. and that are the Canon 300D and the Nikon D70.
So if that is to much for you then you can look for other camera's with manual funtions or wait till the end off september because then the Photokina is held and there most manufacturas will unveil there new models. So maybe there is something new coming that is more for you

Thanks for the info. I will surely wait and watch if there is a model that is suitable for me, or if I should buy D70 anyway, as it is still in my next budget plan. Meanwhile I will still be using my beloved Nikkormat
Well, you could go for good second hand camera such as Canon 10D. There will be more in the market because of the new Canon 20D. Some of the 10D owners will be getting the new 20D and let go their 10D.
You might also try a "bridge" camera like the Fuji Finepix S5000, which you should be able to get for about US$250. I paid GBP189 for mine in June this year and I'm very happy with it, having been used to film SLRs for years. I bought the fujifilm finepix f700, it produces amazing quality pictures, and it isquite small and compact - very happy with it!!
hope that helps
go for d70 ... the best d-slr for beginners
Thanks for sharing your tips and experience. I'm trying Fujifilm Finepix S7000 which I just purchased for my company purpose. It's good, but it's not exactly what I'm looking for. I think I should go for Nikon D70... looking for someone who's going to sell their D70, or just waiting for the price to drop down.
